In October 2025, we embarked on an unforgettable sculpting journey. We participated in a workshop at Marco Maretti’s marble studio in Pietrasanta, Italy. This historic city is an artistic haven, alive with creativity and inspiration. Every street and square pulses with modern sculptures, eclipsing the mundane.
During the workshop, we mastered a variety of techniques to sculpt marble. We learned to wield pneumatic hammers and compressors like real artisans. These tools are essential for working with the divine material that shapes art. But it wasn’t just about technique; we dove into artistic theory too. This experience deepened our appreciation for marble’s rich cultural context.
We received hands-on guidance for safely operating a range of tools. From traditional chisels to modern air hammers and diamond saws, we explored it all. Each carving phase was meticulously taught, from roughing out shapes to fine details. We transformed raw stone into smooth, polished masterpieces. Posture was key; we learned to avoid strain while achieving fluid motion. The “tap-tap meditation state” we developed became a creative rhythm. Maintenance and sharpening of tools were essential skills we acquired.
Understanding how to choose quality marble blocks elevated our craft. We learned to listen to the stone, discerning its unique qualities. Translating concepts through drawing and clay models was an exhilarating challenge.
This journey magnified our creative growth, cultivating intuitive thinking. The vibrant international art community in Pietrasanta was a revelation. Meeting and engaging with fellow artists enriched our experience. Visiting studios like Park Eun-Sun, Cervietti and Pescarella showcased craftsmanship at its finest. Working with marble in Pietrasanta reshaped our artistic confidence. Now, we stand equipped with technical skills and a strong personal style. Our journey revealed that art thrives in connection and experience.
